Senate Votes on $1.2 Trillion Funding Package Amid Amendment Debate

According to the report of Washington Times, in a long and intense meeting the Senate missed the deadline to fund the government on Friday putting it close to a partial shutdown. But late at night Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer made a deal with Senate Republicans. He agreed to let them have 13 chances to change the funding plan to avoid the looming crisis. This deal saved the day but it means there will be a lot of talking before the Senate can vote on the $1.2 trillion funding plan early on Saturday.

Republicans said Democrats were protecting their senators who might lose in the next election from making tough decisions. They wanted changes focusing on border security and they thought Democrats like Jon Tester from Montana were getting an easy way out. Tester said he did have anything to do with the changes and blamed the Republicans instead. Now the Senate is getting ready for a long series of votes on changes to the funding plan. If any changes pass the plan will have to go back to the House for approval. But the problem is the House members already left for a two week break. This makes things harder. With the threat of a shutdown still there both parties need to work together to figure things out before its too late.
