Republicans and Democrats clash over Gustafson’s straw purchase bill, escalating bipartisan tensions
Credit Conflict: Senator Coleman Charges DFL of Political Manipulation in Gustafson’s Firearms Law Rewrite
Republicans and Democrats argued passionately against a bill in the Minnesota Senate that would have made straw purchases of firearms more punishable. The plan, which was put out by Senator Heather Gustafson of the Democratic Party, is a rewrite of a law that was previously written by Senator Julia Coleman of the Republican party. That bill received support from both parties but was held up in the Senate Finance Committee last year. Tensions increased when Coleman suggested Gustafson’s bill was an attempt to take credit for the initiative and accused the DFL of political maneuvering.

Gustafson calls for action on straw purchases and seeks to improve legislation in a collaborative effort
As stated in Valley News Live, Gustafson responded, highlighting her desire to work with interested parties and offering possible changes to make the legislation better. In light of recent tragedies like the Burnsville shooting in February, where illegal firearm transfers were involved, she emphasized the need to tackle straw purchases. With the expectation of moving the law forward before Friday’s deadline for committee hearings, both sides watched the Senate Judiciary Committee meeting, where Gustafson’s bill was scheduled for debate.
