Maryland House Approves $750 Million Transfer for Transportation Fund

Opposition Emerges Over Concerns of Toll Increases and Fund Diversions

The Maryland House has approved a measure to transfer $750 million over ten years to a transportation fund, showing the Democrats’ push to boost revenue for transportation and education. The bill, known as the Maryland Toll Rate Reform Act of 2024, passed with a vote of 91-42 and now heads to the Senate. It aims to address the strain on Maryland’s transportation finances, with plans to repay funds used for projects like the Intercounty Connector near Washington, D.C.

Republican lawmakers opposing the bill argue it could lead to toll increases across the state and divert funds to mass transit. The House’s broader plan includes measures to raise revenue through changes in vehicle taxes, registration fees, and a statewide ride-sharing fee. Additionally, the House passed a bill to legalize internet gambling, estimated to contribute $300 million in revenue, to aid education funding. Governor Wes Moore’s legislative agenda saw success as most bills passed one chamber, including measures to increase housing supply and address child poverty.
