United Way of Greater Waterbury Supports VITA Program in Providing Crucial Assistance to Low-Income Individuals While Educating on Tax Credits

In a collaborative effort to empower low-income and ALICE households, Lt. Governor Susan Bysiewicz joined forces with officials from the United Way of Greater Waterbury for an enlightening event at the Silas Bronson Library. Highlighting the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, attendees learned of the invaluable support it offers individuals earning $63,000 or less, providing them with free tax preparation services by trained volunteers. This initiative not only relieves households of tax preparation fees but also educates them about potential tax credits like the Earned Income Tax Credit and Child Care Tax Credit, bolstering financial stability.

An Increased Earned Income Tax Credit-Supported VITA Event Showcases Vital Support for Waterbury’s ALICE Households

As stated in the Republican American article, with 59% of Waterbury’s population residing at or below the ALICE threshold signifying households earning above the poverty level but grappling with financial constraints, the significance of such programs cannot be overstated. Through VITA and increased support via a raised permanent earned income tax credit, now at 40%, the aim is to alleviate financial burdens and empower families to better navigate the high cost of living in Connecticut. These efforts resonate deeply, enabling households to retain more of their hard-earned income and fulfill essential needs such as housing, food, childcare, and transportation, thereby fostering a more resilient and prosperous community.
