According to cbs news, a budget showdown is unfolding in the Maryland General Assembly as House leaders unveil a $1.3 billion plan for new state revenues primarily aimed at funding future education and transportation costs. The House’s revenue package includes tax hikes, fee increases and the legalization of internet gambling with Speaker Adrienne Jones stressing the need to move away from short term fixes. The plan targets the escalating costs of Maryland’s K-12 education funding plan known as the Blueprint for Maryland’s Future and proposes solutions such as internet gambling revenue and corporate tax reform.

Senate Fully Funds Blueprint for Next Fiscal Year, Concerns Remain for Future Costs Coverage

The Senate approved budget fully funds the Blueprint for the next fiscal year and concerns remain about covering rising costs in subsequent years. The House plan suggests using revenue from internet gambling and implementing corporate tax reform to address these challenges. However neither the Senate nor Governor Wes Moore has shown support for the House’s proposal emphasizing the need for fiscal discipline and caution regarding tax increases. The General Assembly deadline approaching on April 8th, negotiations between the House and Senate are underway to reconcile differences in the budget legislation and find common ground on revenue raising measures.
