According to Cal Matters, a report by the nonpartisan Legislative Analyst’s Office talks about the problems low-wage workers have in California, even though the state’s minimum wage is $16 an hour. Although this high minimum wage is higher than what’s considered poverty by the federal government many low-wage workers struggle because of expensive housing. The report says that even people with jobs like home health aides have trouble affording housing.

California Report Reveals Housing Struggles Among Low-Wage Workers, Prompts Legislative Considerations
The report highlights that many high minimum wage workers in California are Latino with about half being immigrants. Despite living with additional earners and without young children they often struggle to afford housing, especially in big cities and on the Central Coast. Lawmakers may consider different high minimum wage for various areas to address this issue. Attorney General Rob Bonta backs a bill to prevent medical debt from impacting credit reports, aiming to ease financial burdens. Concerns are also raised about changes to CalWORKs, potentially affecting families’ stability. These efforts reflect California’s commitment to supporting struggling individuals and promoting fairness.
