Georgia Senate’s New Bill

The Georgia Senate Public Safety Committee passed a measure that would withhold state taxpayer money from local jurisdictions that declare themselves Sanctuary Cities.

This legislation by the Georgia Senate was amended from a bill related to motor vehicles and traffic and was prompted by the murder of a nursing student on a college campus.

Georgia Senate’s new bill aims to prevent cities from passing policies that go against state law and allows citizens to take legal action if necessary. Additionally, jurisdictions can correct their course to avoid losing funds, and the Georgia Senate’s bill excludes emergency and disaster relief funds.

According to a published article by SmartNews, lawmakers and citizens expressed frustration over the lack of access to the updated version of the Georgia Senate’s bill before the committee hearing.

Georgia Republicans blame President Joe Biden’s immigration policies for the murder, which was committed by an illegal immigrant living in a liberal city.

House Bill 1105

In a published article by Yahoo, democratic lawmakers in Georgia are opposing House Bill 1105, which would require local law enforcement to assist federal agents in enforcing immigration laws.

They argue that the legislation unfairly targets minorities and immigrants without actually making Georgia safer. The bill was introduced following the murder of Laken Riley by an individual in the country illegally.

Republicans defend the bill as a measure to report jailed immigrants to ICE, insisting it is necessary for public safety.
