Senator Ron Wyden Takes Action to Safeguard SNAP Cards and Ensure Secure Food Purchases

According to KOIN, Senator Ron Wyden of Oregon is actively seeking to improve the security of the cards people use to purchase food. He has put forth a new legislation aimed at bolstering the safety of SNAP cards, as they are currently susceptible to being copied by thieves. This unauthorized copying puts the funds intended for buying food at risk of theft.

The proposed law suggests upgrading SNAP cards with a special chip to make them less susceptible to copying. Additionally it calls for better machines in stores that accept these cards. If someone’s card is stolen or not working the law requires the government to provide a replacement quickly and at no cost. Furthermore, the law emphasizes the need for easy online or app access for people to check their account.

Increasing SNAP Card Theft Prompts Urgent Action from Senator Wyden to Protect Families’ Benefits

In Oregon, numerous cases of thieves copying SNAP cards have been reported resulting in a loss of between $150 and $1,500 from May 2022 to July 31, 2023. The year 2022 saw 59 instances of card copying with an increase to 157 cases in 2023. Given the reliance of many families on SNAP benefits Senator Wyden’s law aims to ensure the security and convenience of using this assistance.
