Inmate’s lewd acts, violence, and bad behavior while in Pollock prison

Demetri Goldsmith, 25 years old, was incarcerated at Pollock prison in 2016 because of shooting a woman’s leg and swinging a firearm.

On April 19, 2019, Goldsmith is standing at his cell door performing lewd acts while staring at one of the female correctional officers. According to KALB News, Goldsmith’s actions are against the BOP inmate behavior.  Other correction officers responded to the female guard’s call and tried to put handcuffs on him, but Goldsmith refused, which leads to the officers to open his cell door. However, Goldsmith lunged at them and using a prison shank he managed to stab two of the Pollok prison guards causing injury. He was later put in handcuffs. He celebrated the attack and yelled many times that he stabbed the guards.

Goldsmith’s sentence was an upward departure

Because of Goldsmith’s behavior, the United States District Judge Dee D. Drell has sentenced him an additional 18 years and four months on March 7, 2024. The DOJ said that the sentence was an upward departure from the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines based on the gravity of his long criminal history.

According to U.S. Attorney Brandon B. Brown, their trial team are extremely pleased with the Court’s decision to upward depart because Goldsmith failed to abide by societal and institutional rules. He stated that “being a correctional officer is a thankless job and is onerous on every level”. Goldsmith violently attacked two Pollock prison officers and failed to take responsibility for his actions.
