Feds promised more than $150 million to NYC Migrant Crisis

Reported by the New York Post, on the first finance hearing for Mayor Eric Adam’s financial plan for next year’s fiscal year, City Budget Director Jacques Jiha testified that New York City can received just $49 million for the surging migrant crisis though the federal government vowed to provide more than $150 million. He said that it’s due to the “stringent” requirements, but they are working to collect the remaining $107 million.

According to the Big Apple’s budget chief, they have predicted that the NYC migrant crisis will set the city back $10 billion until the next fiscal year. So, the more than $150 million that the feds promised is a measly 1.5% of the city’s total projected bill. Nevertheless, Gov. Kathy Hochul has given $4.3 billion across 2024 and 2025 to assist with the NYC migrant crisis, though this only covers less than half of the projected bill.

NYC should bring down the census

According to the chair of the budget committee, Councilman Justin Brannan, “Financing an international migrant crisis should have never been the sole responsibility of a municipality, yet here we are”. Budget Director Jiha stressed that there it a need to stem the overall flow of migrants into Gotham. Bring down the population otherwise they must search for new source of funding.

New York City has already spent $4 billion to house and feed at least 170,000 asylum seekers from spring of 2022. Budget Director Jiha noted that the city’s 30-day and 60-day-limit rule for migrant shelters are part of bringing down the census.
