Residents of Washington County have different opinions about the sales tax increase proposal.
A Proposal For A Sales Tax Increase
In Washington County, there is a referendum for a sales tax increase of one-fourth of a cent on the ballot. It is a local option that a sales tax increase would generate around $300,000 annually.
The generated amount from the sales tax increase will also stay within the county. Only certain items like prepared food and hotels would be involved in the sales tax increase. While gas, groceries, and medicine are exempted from the proposed sales tax increase.
According to a published article by SmartNews, both residents and tourists would pay the sales tax increase, which could help prevent a property tax increase. Some residents support the proposed sales tax increase as it would provide much-needed funds for the county.
However, others are against the sales tax increase due to a lack of understanding. An education campaign is being pushed to inform citizens about the benefits of the said sales tax increase.
Washington State Legislature’s Decision
In a published article by The Daily Chronicle, the Washington State Legislature decided not to approve a proposal that would have allowed cities and counties to raise property tax rates by 3% without needing approval from voters.
This decision was made after significant opposition to the bill, with concerns about the potential impact on taxpayers, especially renters.
