Montana Tax Relief

Governor Gianforte wants the property tax task force to find ways to achieve Montana tax relief to homeowners without recommending a statewide sales tax. One potential solution that could make the Montana tax relief achievable is to explore increasing the homeowner’s exemption.

Implementing a circuit breaker program to help lower-income homeowners can also be an option to achieve Montana tax relief. Another option for the hopeful Montana tax relief is to reassess the current property tax system to ensure it is fair and equitable for all Montana residents.

According to a published article by SmartNews, by focusing on these alternatives for Montana tax relief, the task force can work towards achieving Governor Gianforte’s goal of providing permanent Montana tax relief without resorting to a statewide sales tax.

The Property Tax Task Force

In a published article by Bozeman Daily Chronicle, the task force was formed in response to rising property taxes, with analysis showing a 21% increase in residential properties this year.

The group is tasked with compiling recommendations for legislation to be considered by the Montana Legislature next year. Members discussed challenges such as the transfer of tax burden onto residences from other properties and the complexity of understanding property tax bills.
