Returns By The Illinois State Treasurer

The Illinois State Treasurer Office returned $17.2 million in missing money in January, including cash, interest, and stock value. There were a total of 25,434 claims paid according to the Illinois State Treasurer Office.

Unclaimed property, such as rebate checks and stocks, ends up at the State Treasurer Office when companies and banks cannot return them to their owners. Last year, nearly $276 million was returned by the Illinois State Treasurer Office through 314,154 claims.

Illinois State Treasurer Frerichs has returned over $1.9 billion since 2015. It is estimated that one in four people in Illinois have unclaimed property, with an average claim of $1,000, the Illinois State Treasurer Office added.

According to a published article by SmartNews, to check for unclaimed property, the Illinois State Treasurer Office recommends visiting icash.illinoistreasurer.gov and check the database every six months. The Illinois State Treasurer Office currently holds over $5 billion in unclaimed property.

In a published article by CIProud.com, Treasurer Michael Frerichs encourages people to check the I-Cash website to see if there is money waiting for them, as Illinois holds over $5 billion in unclaimed property.

He also suggests checking on the unclaimed property of deceased relatives. Last year, the office returned nearly $276 million in missing money.
