Betrayal of Trust: Former South Carolina Priest Locked Away for Child Sexual Abuse

In a tale of trust betrayed, a former South Carolina priest, Jaime Adolfo Gonzalez-Farias, was sentenced to 262 months in federal prison for transportation of a minor with intent to engage in illegal sexual acts, as reported by the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Known as “Father Gonzalez,” the 69-year-old visited the Palmetto State from Chile and served as a Catholic priest since at least 1990, ministering in South Carolina from 2015 until his suspension by Catholic authorities in late 2020.

The abuse case came to light when Farias met an 11-year-old boy and his family in early 2020, through his role as a priest. The victim, who is the younger brother of a seminarian at Farias’ parish, was showered with gifts and attention. As time passed, the culprit began grooming the victim with online messages, eventually progressing to explicit sexual content. Investigators discovered numerous text messages and WhatsApp messages exchanged between the two, evidencing the manipulation and exploitation of a vulnerable child.

During a November 2020 trip to Florida, disguised as a beach vacation, Farias committed heinous acts against the victim, including masturbating in front of the child and attempting sexual assault while showing the victim pornography. Following an investigation by the FBI and Laurens County Sheriff’s Office, Farias was arrested at Miami International Airport in November 2022. He admitted to touching the victim’s genitals, showering with him in South Carolina, and displaying pornography, resulting in a substantial sentence.

This case reveals a disturbing pattern of inappropriate behavior over the years. A parishioner’s 2017 photo of Farias carrying a youngster to Walmart prompted suspicions. The following year, a mother worried about the priest’s treatment of her 10- and 12-year-old nephews. It worried her that Gonzalez-Farias watched the 10-year-old “behind closed doors.” Gonzalez-Farias departed the nation before the Roman Catholic Diocese of Charleston learned about the charges.
