A new real estate rebate program in Montgomery County honors Tax Rebate for volunteer heroes such as firefighters and EMS workers. A recent county commissioners meeting unanimously passed the Active Volunteer Real Estate Tax Rebate Ordinance, which will help these local heroes financially.
Tax Rebate for Volunteer Heroes
Chief Financial Officer Dean Dortone said that Montgomery County has 101 volunteer fire and EMS groups with 3,000 members, highlighting their importance. These committed professionals answered nearly 113,000 calls for help last year, demonstrating their vital role in neighborhood safety.
The county acknowledged the need to assist volunteer emergency workers during a 13% real estate tax hike in December 2023. With real estate taxes rising, residents are burdened more, making rebate programs crucial.
Vice Chairwoman Jamila Winder proposed the scheme, which offers volunteer firemen and EMS workers up to 100% municipal real estate tax credits. Participation is simple: Montgomery County residents must be active in a local fire company or nonprofit EMS outfit and have no outstanding county real estate tax bills or assessments.

Montgomery County’s Real Estate Rebate Program
A point-based system determines the reimbursement amount, rewarding volunteers for responding to calls, training, outreach, and leadership. The refund requires 50 points, with different rebate rates dependent on point thresholds.
We aim to post-program eligibility and point allocation online within two months, making it transparent and accessible to interested participants. Visit the Montgomery County website for further information.
Overall, Montgomery County’s real estate rebate program shows a proactive commitment to supporting and appreciating volunteer firemen and EMS workers. The county hopes to strengthen community emergency response by reducing financial constraints and rewarding service.
