Military targets include air defense and coastal radar sites in response to Houthi attacks on international maritime vessels

The U.S. and British launched airstrikes against the Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen quickly and decisively. Retaliatory assaults from warships and submarines have targeted over a dozen targets with Tomahawk missiles and fighter jets. Air defense and coastal radar installations, drone and missile storage, and launch sites are examples. These measures were adopted because the Houthis have been assaulting foreign ships in the Red Sea constantly, including for the first time with ballistic missiles.

President Joe Biden ordered the strikes after diplomatic conversations and careful consideration to show the U.S. and its allies’ strong opposition to the Houthi group. The attacks threatened U.S. personnel, civilian mariners, and trade, prompting retaliation. Drone and missile strikes on commercial ships have escalated regional tensions, prompting military action.

The coordinated military strike follows a final warning from the White House and partner governments to the Houthis to stop or risk military action. The first U.S. military response to the Houthi attacks was the strike of several high-value military targets. The U.K. joined the operation to show solidarity with a broad international coalition against the Houthis’ escalating threat.

Notably, the U.S. and its international coalition partners have pledged to de-escalate and stabilize the Red Sea. However, they have pledged to defend life and business along this vital waterway. A broader plan to protect international trade and security in the region focuses on deterring and defeating marine threats.
