In preparation for the 2024 tax season, the IRS has released a comprehensive guide to important filing dates and exciting developments. These critical dates include the opening of IRS Free File, due dates for estimated tax payments, and the start of the filing season for individual tax returns on January 29th.   • January 12: IRS Free File opens.
  • January 16: Due date for 2023 fourth quarter estimated tax payments.
  • January 26: Earned Income Tax Credit Awareness Day.
  • January 29: Filing season start date for individual tax returns.
  • April 15: Due date of filing a tax return or requesting an extension for most of the nation.
  • April 17: Due date for Maine and Massachusetts.
  • October 15: Due date for extension filers.

Additionally, the IRS has introduced new tools and programs to make the 2024 tax season more convenient for taxpayers. Among these developments is the “Where’s My Refund?” tool, which allows individuals to track their refunds and manage any necessary communications with the IRS. Furthermore, taxpayers can now create an Individual Online Account to manage payment plans and confirm processed payments.
