SpaceX’s historic Falcon 9 rocket, known as booster B1058, met a poignant end on the return trip to Cape Canaveral, Florida after its 19th and final mission. Once the lead rocket in SpaceX’s reusable fleet, this booster had made history as the vehicle that launched NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken on SpaceX’s first crew mission in 2020.

The historic May 30, 2020 mission, named Demo-2, marked several significant milestones in space exploration. It signaled the first instance of a commercial rocket and spacecraft ferrying astronauts into orbit, ending a nine-year American reliance on Russian rockets to transport crews to the International Space Station, following the retirement of the space shuttle.

Following the historic launch, the booster was recovered on one of SpaceX’s offshore landing platforms, after which it continued to serve admirably. It underwent 18 more missions, primarily dedicated to deploying Starlink Internet satellites.
