Maine SNAP Recipients Affected by Hurricane Granted Extended Deadline for Replacement Benefits

Maine SNAP recipients who lost food due to the hurricane have until January 18, 2024, to apply for replacement benefits.

After rapid approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which supervises SNAP, the 10-day window from food loss or power restoration has been enlarged. This extension gives Maine people more time to recover from the storm.

Report food losses to DHHS by January 18, 2024, to request replacement assistance. Application forms are available online and at DHHS offices. Email [email protected] or pick up printed forms at local DHHS offices. The replacement benefit is the lesser of the total value of the lost SNAP food or one month’s benefit.

Maine DHHS Offers Additional Support Through General Assistance for Storm-Affected Residents

Besides SNAP, General Assistance (GA) can help with storm-related expenses. GA administrators may help storm victims before final verification. Food loss or other effects from Monday’s storm may qualify as an emergency. Local city or town offices accept GA applications. Call 1-800-442-6003 for help reaching your local GA administration or with questions.

In recognition of SNAP participants’ challenges, the Maine DHHS is distributing General Assistance to help hurricane victims.
