Financial Relief: Cook County Treasurer Announces $30.5M in Tax Refunds for 9,000 Property Owners

Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas made a nice announcement this holiday season: more than 9,000 property owners will get a cash windfall in the form of property tax returns worth more than $30.5 million. The goal of this project is to make things as easy as possible for people who have overpaid their property taxes in the past. The treasurer’s office thinks that most people who get refunds won’t have to do any paperwork, fill out applications, or file anything else. The refunds will be sent to them instantly. For those who are qualified, half of the refunds will be sent straight to their bank accounts within three months.

The refund distribution details reveal that approximately 1,900 homeowners who made online property tax payments will receive $13.1 million collectively deposited directly into their bank accounts. Over 4,000 homeowners who paid their taxes through a bank mortgage escrow account will be issued return checks amounting to $8 million via mail. Additionally, nearly 2,900 homeowners who contributed a total of $9.3 million in cash or check payments will either receive their refunds electronically or be provided with a refund application to ensure accurate distribution of the funds.

People who get tax breaks, like homeowners, seniors, recipients of the Senior Freeze program, and disabled people, will benefit the most from this goodwill effort. A huge $47 million was returned to property owners in Cook County by Maria Pappas last year.
