Debate Surrounds Huawei’s Kirin Chips: Inventory Use or Technological Leap

Given its Mate60 Pro phone’s use of 7nm technology, people are wondering if the Chinese tech giant is exploiting Taiwanese inventory or making a scientific breakthrough. A Kirin 9006C chip with an octa-core ARM CPU powers the new Qingyun L540 laptop.

It’s unclear if this processor is Chinese-made or a tweaked version of TSMC’s Kirin 9000 chip from three years ago.

Despite the vagueness, the US will restrict Huawei’s chip-making. U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo raised worry over Huawei’s Kirin 9000s chip introduction and promised “strongest action possible.”

Commerce Department Investigates Huawei’s Chips Amid Technology Debates

The Commerce Department is investigating. This move follows past debates concerning Huawei’s usage of technology and chips, with some experts noting that SMIC’s Kirin 9000s chip announced in August was manufactured using a unique procedure.

The origin and technology of Huawei’s processors have divided views. Some say Huawei shouldn’t have kept premium chips for three years, while others dispute copying older chips. As Huawei advances technologically, the discussions reflect its continuous scrutiny and obstacles, especially in light of U.S. sanctions and global worries about its technology.
