Direct Payment Through Direct Pay Bill

One of the problems that EMS in New York is facing is the reimbursement and payment of ambulance everytime they transport a patient. Traditionally, the insurance companies gave the payment to the patients but they never paid the EMS.

In a published article in EMS1, New York Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the “Direct Pay Bill” which mandates the insurance companies to directly pay the EMS instead of giving the payment to the patients. In this way, the EMS will be assured that will be paid when they transport a patient.

According to an article published in Rochester First, the new law does not allow and permit the insurance companies to pay ambulance rides to the patients, but they need to to send the payments directly to the EMS provider.

Jeffrey Call, the head of the United New York Ambulance Network, said, “Now, no matter if an ambulance service provider is ‘in-network’ or ‘out-of-network,’ reimbursement for every response will come directly from the health insurance company,” Call told WROC. “Patients are no longer forced to be the middleman in a broken payment process that oftentimes left out ambulance providers.”
