Thousands of families in Georgia continue to encounter a problem receiving their monthly Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits have been a hallmark for millions of Americans during the pandemic and the rising cost of basic commodities. This has helped American families buy nutritious foods.

In a published article in Black Enterprise, the Georgia Department of Human Services admitted that they encountered problems in distributing the SNAP benefits to the recipients in the state. This has grappled with backlogs already for a year.

Delays of SNAP Benefits in Georgia

According to a published article in 11Alive, the delay in SNAP benefits is due to a lack of staff to process the backlog and new applications. On the other hand, a spokesperson for the Georgia Department of Human Services said that they are now processing the renewals of SNAP benefits.

The spokesperson said, “We are also offering stipends to incentivize field leadership staff to carry a caseload. Since January, we have hired 923 new Economic Support Specialist 1 workers–and secured millions in new funding through legislative advocacy to make that possible.”
