U.S.’ Restrictions on China’s Advanced Technology Include Discontinuing Marketing of AI Chips

The administration of U.S. President Biden will discontinue the authorization to market AI chips to China. Reports say this tighter measure on the restrictions intends to settle the loopholes made for China’s advanced technology last year.

On October 17, the U.S. Department of Commerce disclosed new measures that intend to further tighten the restrictions on China’s advanced technology that were first introduced in October 2022. Reports say the administration of U.S. President Joe Biden will reduce the types of semiconductors that American companies will be able to market to the East Asian country.

An article in the South China Morning Post states that according to a regulatory filing from a U.S. company, China’s advanced technology of artificial intelligence chips like the A800 and H800 products of hardware and software supplier Nvidia will be impacted by the new measures.

China’s Advanced Technology Further Restricted

According to an article in CNN, the original restrictions on China’s advanced technology intend to hinder the East Asian country’s ability to obtain computing chips and manufacture weapons systems. However, since technology is developing, senior administration officials suggested that the restrictions must also be modified.

Reports say the new restrictions on China’s advanced technology will extend beyond mainland China, Macao, and 21 other countries, including Iran and Russia, to which the U.S. also maintains a restriction for weaponry and technology. In addition, the new restrictions are reportedly scheduled to take effect in almost a month.
