Tropical Storm Philippe Intensifies, Possibly Bringing Threats To Puerto Rico And The US Virgin Islands (Photo: The New York Times)

The National Hurricane Center’s forecasters indicated that on Wednesday, the Tropical Storm Philippe in the Atlantic Ocean slightly strengthened. 

They issued a warning that the Tropical Storm Philippe could bring heavy rainfall and possible floods to Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands.

As of Wednesday at 5 p.m. EDT, Tropical Storm Philippe had winds of 50 mph and was still about 600 miles east of the northern Caribbean islands. 

Forecasters were keeping an eye on a tropical wave that was much farther out in the Atlantic in addition to Tropical Storm Philippe. Over the next couple of days, the wave is most likely to develop into Tropical Storm Rina.

Be prepared for  the Tropical Storm Philippe’s impact

The northern Leeward Islands, the Virgin Islands, and eastern Puerto Rico are expected to receive 2 to 4 inches of rain from Tropical Storm Philippe from Saturday through Monday, according to the hurricane center. 

Between one and two inches of rain brought by Tropical Storm Philippe are anticipated elsewhere in Puerto Rico.

The hurricane agency warned that Tropical Storm Philippe’s heavy rains could cause isolated urban and small stream flooding effects.

Strong downpours brought by Tropical Storm Philippe may be powerful and prolonged enough to cause instances of flash flooding, especially on the larger mountainous islands like Puerto Rico and Hispaniola, according to AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski.
