On July 13, Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann was arrested in connection with the deaths of three ladies whose remains were discovered on a lonely coastal highway on Long Island.

Prosecutors claimed in court on Wednesday that DNA taken from the Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann, suspect in the Gilgo Beach serial killings, matches DNA previously taken from a pizza crust and used to connect Heuermann to one of the victims.

Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann, 60, was detained on July 13 on murder charges in connection with the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman, and Amber Costello, three of the women whose bodies were discovered along a secluded coastal route on Long Island. Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann has also been identified as the main suspect in the death of a fourth woman.

Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann was detained without bond at Suffolk County Jail in Riverhead after entering a not guilty plea.

Prosecutors said that they had tested the DNA from hairs found on Waterman’s body and compared it to DNA from a pizza crust Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann had thrown away in a Manhattan trash can at the time of his arrest.

As additional evidence of Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann’s involvement in the murder of Waterman, the prosecution obtained authorization from the court to take DNA from a cheek swab of Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann.

Thirteen years after authorities discovered 10 sets of human remains buried in the underbrush close to Long Island’s secluded Gilgo Beach, Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann was arrested.

On Wednesday, prosecutors informed Suffolk County Court Judge Timothy Mazzei that they had provided Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann’s defense team with hundreds of papers.

Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann admitted to the judge that he had been analyzing the material against him for two to three hours each day.

The importance of the DNA sample was questioned by Heuermann’s legal counsel. 

According to the New York Post, defense counsel Michael Brown stated outside of court that no one on earth who is credible is going to claim that the hair is actually Gilgo Beach suspect Rex Heuermann, his client’s hair.
