Days after security forces regained control of the Tocoron prison that had previously been under the control of gangs for years, the Venezuelan government permitted journalists to visit the Tocoron Penitentiary Center in the state of Aragua on Saturday.

According to the Venezuelan Information Ministry, the Tocoron prison, one of the biggest in the nation, had previously been controlled directly by inmates, many of whom belonged to the potent international criminal organization ‘Tren de Aragua,’ (Train of Aragua), named after the state in which Tocoron is located.

More than 11,000 people were involved in a special operation on Wednesday by Venezuelan security forces, including the Army and National Guard, to retake control of the Tocoron prison grounds.

Remigio Ceballos, Venezuela’s interior minister, declared the operation a total success.

Ceballos announced that 80 senior Tren de Aragua gang members were captured by security personnel after the Tocoron prison had been taken over during the media visit on Saturday.

Ceballos contradicted claims made in the media that the government had discussed the operation with gang leaders in Tocoron prison.

Journalists including a CNNe team were given tour of Tocoron prison’s inside restaurants and swimming pool in recent years.

Following the raid, authorities posted pictures of the automatic rifles, machine guns and enormous quantities of ammo they had taken from convicts in Tocoron prison.

Following the operation, thousands of prisoners in the Tocoron prison were relocated to different jails, according to the Venezuelan Information Ministry. Tocoron prison’s inmate relatives contradict these assertions, stating that they haven’t spoken to them since the morning of the event.
