On September 20, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) officially announced that it would ban China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology from receiving U.S. funding for the next 10 years. Reports say the announcement came after more evidence has pointed to the Coronavirus leaking out of the research institute’s laboratory.

According to Etzel, on September 19, HHS Secretary Xavier Becerra sent a notice to Dr. Yanyi Wang, Director General of China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology, informing her that the research institute would be denied U.S. research grants until July 16, 2033. Nonetheless, reports say no officials from the institute had disputed nor responded to the decision.
