‘Pillar of Shame’ Danish Artist Believes Hong Kong Authorities Has Warrant For His Arrest

Danish artist Jens Galschiøt claims that he believes Hong Kong authorities have a warrant for his arrest. Reports say Galschiøt criticized the authorities after the “Pillar of Shame” sculpture that he created was dismantled in December 2021.

The 26-foot-tall “Pillar of Shame” sculpture that was displayed at the University of Hong Kong for 24 years depicted thousands of protesters who were killed by the Chinese government in 1989. However, the Pillar of Shame, which was one of the last memorials to Tiananmen, was removed due to the repression of protests in Beijing in 2019.

According to Chow, after the Pillar of Shame was dismantled in December 2021, Danish artist Jens Galschiøt called for the sculpture to be returned to him and asked whether he was at risk of being arrested under the law. Reports say Galschiøt has been criticizing the Hong Kong authorities after the dismantling and the later requisition of the Pillar of Shame by national security officials.

Pillar of Shame Artist’s Arrest

Further reports say on August 27, Hong Kong Security Secretary Chris Tang declined to deny the news that authorities intend to arrest Galschiøt. According to Gavin, earlier in August, Sing Tao Daily newspaper mentioned sources that revealed the national security police’s intention to arrest Galschiøt if he visited the city. In addition, the authorities could allegedly invoke the city’s national security law to take Galschiøt to mainland China for trial.
