House Republicans have taken action in the ongoing criminal investigation on Hunter Biden, issuing four subpoenas to Department of Justice (DOJ) and Internal Revenue Service (IRS) personnel. The subpoenas are part of the Republicans’ efforts to probe alleged mishandling and potential political interference in the criminal investigation on Hunter Biden, CNN reported.

Subpoenas Were Issued Related to Criminal Investigation on Hunter Biden

The subpoenas were issued by House Judiciary Chair Jim Jordan and House Ways and Means Chair Jason Smith. They are aimed at individuals connected to a crucial October 2022 meeting, which IRS whistleblowers claim exposed obstacles faced by US Attorney David Weiss in bringing charges and criminal investigation on Hunter Biden.

This move by House Republicans demonstrates their commitment to securing testimony in their criminal investigation on Hunter Biden, despite the recent appointment of David Weiss as a special counsel for the case. The introduction of Weiss in a new capacity might create challenges in compelling cooperation from the prosecutors and investigators engaged in the ongoing investigation.

The individuals subpoenaed include IRS Director of Field Operations Michael Batdorf, IRS Special Agent in Charge Darrell Waldon, FBI Special Agent in Charge Thomas Sobocinski, and FBI Assistant Special Agent in Charge Ryeshia Holley. These subpoenas aim to shed light on the October 2022 meeting and the issues raised by IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley.

Shapley has testified that Weiss indicated he was not the final decision-maker on whether charges would be filed against Hunter Biden. These claims contrast with statements made by Weiss and Attorney General Merrick Garland regarding Weiss’ independence in the case.

The timing of the appointment of David Weiss as a special counsel also raises questions for House Republicans, particularly considering the allegations of impropriety raised by whistleblowers. Weiss had previously offered to testify on Capitol Hill, but his new status might limit his ability to do so until the criminal investigation on Hunter Biden is concluded and his report is finalized.
