Sanctions focus on businesses connected to Ashot Mkrtychev, previously targeted for arms deals between Russia and North Korea.

A recent article from The Hill highlights the Biden administration’s strong response, as they’ve taken action to impose sanctions on three distinct businesses involved in a covert operation. The operation’s goal was to transfer weapons from North Korea to Russia, raising significant concerns due to Russia’s role in the ongoing Ukrainian conflict.

These sanctions have been specifically targeted at three businesses associated with Ashot Mkrtychev, a Slovakian national. Notably, Mkrtychev had previously faced U.S. sanctions in March for his part in arranging arms deals between Russia and North Korea.

According to allegations by the U.S. Treasury Department, Mkrtychev collaborated with DPRK officials in an effort to secure more than twenty-five different types of weapons and munitions for Russia. This endeavor involved offering a range of commodities, including commercial aircraft, raw materials, and other resources required by North Korea.
