US Ambassador to Russia visits imprisoned WSJ reporter Evan Gershkovich and reports he is in “good health”

Ambassador Tracy: Evan appears to be in good condition and is strong

According to Ambassador Tracy, Evan appears to be in good condition and is still robust despite his extremely difficult circumstances, according to State Department spokesman Vedant Patel. Officials from the embassy will continue to offer Evan and his family all necessary support. Additionally, we anticipate continuous consular access from Russian authorities, reports WCCS Radio.

Once more, he urged the Russian Federation to free fellow American citizen Paul Whelan and arrested Russian citizen Evan Gershkovich. Whelan was detained in 2018 and given a 16-year prison term in 2020 for espionage.

U.S. authorities: Gershkovich had been illegally jailed

In an article from The Wall Street Journal, American citizen Gershkovich, 31, was detained in Yekaterinburg while visiting Russia for reporting. The claims were refuted by him and his company, and the U.S. authorities determined that he had been illegally jailed. In Russia, where officials have not offered any proof to back up the espionage allegations, his detention alarmed journalists.

US News reported that the notoriously brutal Lefortovo jail in Moscow is where Gershkovich is being kept. Since Nicholas Daniloff, a U.S. correspondent in Moscow, was accused of espionage in September 1986, he is the only American journalist to face charges in Russia. The KGB took News and World Report into custody. Twenty days later, Daniloff was freed in exchange for a U.N. employee working for the Soviet Union. who was also accused of spying and was taken into custody by the FBI.
