In the latest display of cutting-edge space technology and exploration, NASA’s researchers, armed with advanced instruments including the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and the Asteroid Terrestrial-impact Last Alert System (ATLAS), have unveiled intriguing details about an imminent celestial event—a close encounter between Earth and a sizeable asteroid called Asteroid 2022 BS2.
Asteroid 2022 BS2
Under the watchful eye of NASA, Asteroid 2022 BS2, classified as a near-Earth asteroid, is poised to perform its closest flyby of our planet on August 11th.
According to Hindustan Times, this astronomical rendezvous will see the asteroid approach Earth at a distance of approximately 6.6 million kilometers.
According to NASA’s findings, Asteroid 2022 BS2 boasts a width of nearly 95 feet—equivalent to the dimensions of a sizeable aircraft! This celestial traveler belongs to the Apollo group of Near-Earth Asteroids, a subset characterized by their orbits that intersect Earth’s path, with semi-major axes surpassing that of our planet.
The naming of this category traces its roots back to the discovery of the 1862 Apollo asteroid, an impressive find credited to German astronomer Karl Reinmuth during the 1930s.

Will Asteroid 2022 BS2 Pose Any Dangers?
While there is no cause for alarm as the asteroid is not on a collision course with our planet, the proximity is sufficient to categorize it as a Near-Earth Object (NEO).
The Minor Planet Center, an authoritative source on such matters, discloses that Asteroid 2022 BS2 completes an orbit around the Sun in the span of 380 days, a published article reported.
The first sighting of this space rock was recorded on January 27, 2022—a moment that marked the initiation of a detailed observation campaign.
As the cosmos continues to unveil its mysteries, the dance between celestial bodies serves as a constant reminder of the dynamic and interconnected nature of our universe. The close approach of Asteroid 2022 BS2 provides a moment of scientific wonder and reflection, showcasing humanity’s dedication to understanding and navigating the intricacies of the cosmos.
