Suspect of Shooting in Muncie Indiana Charged, Faces Potential 20-Year Sentence

John L. Vance Jr., 36, the suspect in the shooting in Muncie Indiana, is already facing two counts of aggravated battery charges.

The prosecutor’s decision to add a felony firearm sentencing enhancement carries significant implications for Vance’s potential sentence, as it could extend his incarceration period by anywhere from five to 20 years if he is found guilty.

Eric Hoffman, the Delaware County Prosecutor, provided insights into the additional charge filed against the suspect of the shooting in Muncie Indiana.

The enhancement underscores the possession and use of a firearm in connection with the alleged criminal acts, emphasizing the potential dangers posed by such weapons in incidents like the one that transpired in Muncie.

Since his arrest on August 1, Vance has been in custody, with a bond set at $105,000. His legal representation remains unspecified, and online court records offer limited information regarding his defense.

Hoffman has also taken steps to classify Vance as a habitual offender, a decision that could result in a more extended sentence if he is ultimately found guilty of the charges levied against him.

Vance is also facing allegations of criminal recklessness and the possession of a firearm by a serious violent felon.

Notably, the charges do not explicitly reference the shooting death of Joseph E. Bonner III, a 30-year-old resident of Muncie, which occurred on July 30.

Vance’s criminal history includes convictions for multiple serious offenses, including drug-related crimes, resisting arrest, and possessing firearms as a serious violent felon.
