Mayor London Breed Housing for All Targets Educators: 135 New Homes Announced

Mayor London Breed Housing for All  Targets Educators

With the city facing a pressing need for teachers and affordable housing, Mayor London Breed‘s office has committed to providing over 135 new affordable homes specifically for teachers, teacher’s aides, and early childhood educators who are employed by the San Francisco Unified School District and the San Francisco Community College District.

According to CBS News, the initiative of Mayor London Breed aims to not only alleviate the housing crisis but also to attract and retain talented educators in the city’s educational institutions.

According to SFUSD Superintendent Matt Wayne, the availability of increased housing options for educators will play a crucial role in strengthening the ties between the educators and the San Francisco communities they serve.

To fund the housing projects of Mayor London Breed, a substantial amount of $32 million has been allocated.

The responsibility for developing the two housing projects has been entrusted by Mayor London Breed to nonprofit agencies, namely the MidPen Housing Corporation and the Mission Economic Development Agency. 

They will work on two distinct projects: an affordable rental housing project located at 570 Golden Gate Ave., and another project featuring below-market-rate homes for purchase at 2205 Mission St.

The rents and purchase prices for these homes will be set to lie within the range of 40% to 140% of the area’s median income, ensuring affordability for the target group of educators.

Priority for these housing units will be given to educators, as well as other school employees and their families, aiming to provide a nurturing and supportive living environment for those working in the education sector.

Mayor London Breed Housing Timeline

According to a published article,  the timeline for these housing projects indicates that construction may commence as early as 2024, with the goal of having residents move into their new homes by the end of 2026.

However, the successful execution of these plans is subject to the resolution of any remaining funding gaps.

These new housing projects represent the city’s second and third ventures into providing affordable housing specifically for educators. The first project, known as Shirley Chisholm Village, is currently in progress at 1360 43rd Ave. in the Outer Sunset neighborhood.

Mayor London Breed’s office has identified this ongoing project as a model for the development of similar housing initiatives that cater to the needs of San Francisco’s educators.

Mayor London Breed has expressed her enthusiasm for this project and its potential positive impact on the public education system. Furthermore, these housing projects are aligned with Mayor London Breed’s overarching Housing for All plan.

This comprehensive plan aims to meet California’s mandate that requires San Francisco to construct a staggering 82,000 new homes within the next eight years. By targeting the specific needs of educators, this initiative takes a crucial step toward fulfilling the broader objective of making housing more accessible and affordable for all residents of San Francisco.
