Hundreds of residents will be eligible for direct payments of $500 over the next two years.
170 lucky candidates will be randomly selected in a lottery to receive direct payments
Candidates eligible for direct payment can apply from October 31, 2022, with city officials saying the first direct payment check must be sent by January 2023 and received within 24 consecutive months without any spending stipulation meaning the beneficiary of the direct payments can use it as they see fit.
The direct payments project was initially launched to provide 100 households with a $300 monthly direct payment for two years, starting in June 2021.
The direct payment program, operated by the United Way California Capital Region, was funded through Mayor Darrell Steinberg’s recommendation to use the $750,000 in the American Relief Plan Act
United Way said direct payments program participants must be prepared to provide proof of income if selected through the lottery process. It also warned that participating in a direct payments program could affect eligibility for income for other public benefits.
Certain eligibility requirements must be met before entering the direct payments selection process, for example, residents must be 18 years of age or older and their income must not exceed 50% of median income. The average for the area, in this case, the one-person household limit is $49,850.
