In May 2023, almost 67 million individuals, including more than 49 million retired employees, were able to receive the Social Security checks in 2023. However, on the contrary, almost 2.7 million individuals aged 60 and above will reportedly never receive the benefits.According to Williams, to be able to receive the Social Security checks in 2023, an individual must have earned 40 work credits during their employment. In three months, an employee can obtain 1 work credit which amounts to $1,640 in earned income. This means that the maximum number of credits that can be obtained every year is four and the maximum earned income can be up to $6,560.

Exemption in Work Credits Requirements
According to Richie, employees with long-term disabilities can be eligible for the Social Security checks in 2023 even if they have not met the 40 work credits requirements. Furthermore, an individual with no employment history at all can still qualify for the benefits.
However, this exemption will only be for spouses who will qualify as a survivor. To be able to receive the Social Security checks in 2023, a survivor’s spouse who had passed away first must have been the only earner throughout their lifetime.
