2-Year-Old Ohio Boy Accidentally Kills Pregnant Mother with Found Firearm

In Norwalk, a 2-year-old Ohio boy toddler accidentally discharged a loaded firearm he had apparently discovered in his parents’ nightstand, tragically causing the death of his eight-months-pregnant mother.

2-Year-Old Ohio Boy Accidentally Kills Pregnant Mother

The Norwalk Police Department responded to a distressing 911 call at approximately 1:15 p.m. on Friday, made by 31-year-old Laura Ilg, who reported that she had been shot in the back by her 2-year-old Ohio boy inside their residence.

Almost simultaneously, her husband, 28-year-old Alek Ilg, called emergency services after Laura screamed about their 2-year-old son. Alek was not present at the time as he was at work.

Law enforcement officers arrived swiftly to discover Laura Ilg, who was 33 weeks pregnant, in her upstairs bedroom with her 2-year-old Ohio boy. Sadly, she had sustained critical injuries caused by a single gunshot.

Remarkably, she remained conscious and was able to provide the officers with a harrowing account of the events.

Urgently, Laura was transported to Fisher-Titus Medical Center, where medical professionals performed an emergency cesarean section in an attempt to save her unborn child.

Tragically, despite the efforts made, the unborn child did not survive, and Laura succumbed to her injuries approximately three hours later.

Laura Ilg, born in North Carolina, was described in her obituary as a devout churchgoer who cherished spending time with her family. She was an avid reader and held a particular fondness for Harry Potter. Additionally, she enjoyed crafting and playing board games, according to the obituary.

How the 2-Year-Old Ohio Boy Found the Loaded Gun

Authorities revealed that the firearm, a loaded semi-automatic pistol, belonged to Laura’s husband, Alek Ilg, and was typically stored on the couple’s nightstand.

According to statements given by Laura before her untimely passing, the room where the gun was kept is usually locked, and multiple baby gates are in place throughout the house as an added safety measure.

It remains unclear how the 2-year-old Ohio boy gained access to the locked room and discovered the firearm while Laura was attending to laundry.

During the subsequent search of the residence, law enforcement officials uncovered two additional firearms. A loaded 12-gauge shotgun was found in the couple’s bedroom closet, while an airsoft rifle was discovered in a closet within the computer room.

These findings further underscore the importance of responsible firearm storage and highlight potential risks when weapons are not securely stored away from the reach of children.

As the investigation into the tragic incident continues, authorities are focused on determining how the 2-year-old Ohio boy was able to manipulate the firearm’s trigger, leading to the fatal discharge.

The surviving 2-year-old Ohio boy is currently staying with his father, Alek Ilg, while the investigation remains ongoing.

Presently, no charges have been filed in relation to the incident. The Norwalk Police Department intends to forward the case to the Huron County Prosecutor’s Office for further review and determination of appropriate legal action.
