Parking Lot Juneteenth Party Shooting Incident

The DuPage County Sheriff’s Office said that Juneteenth is supposedly a  “peaceful gathering” to celebrate when suddenly it turned into a bloody violent incident that several people fired multiple shots into the crowd of the Chicago parking lot.

AP News reported the sheriff’s office said in a statement that 22 victims were injured while attempting to flee the area and one victim was killed by gunfire and authorities didn’t immediately release the conditions of those injured.

The Motive Of The Shooting Is Still Unknown

The motive for the attack remains unknown, and no one was arrested by early evening. The Daily Herald reported that Sheriff’s spokesman Robert Carroll stated authorities were interviewing “persons of interest” in the shooting.

Police were at the strip mall before the shooting at the Chicago parking lot to monitor the gathering, but were summoned away due to a nearby fight, the sheriff’s office said.

The sheriff also said that as they heard gunshots they immediately returned to the scene. Eric Swanson, deputy chief at the sheriff’s office said that at the scene they transported numerous victims, and other victims just walked into nearby area hospitals.

Markeshia Avery a witness from the scene, said that it was a Juneteenth celebration the shooting happened and it was Monday, a federal holiday commemorating the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they had been freed two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

Avery told WLS-TV  that they just started hearing gunfire, so they dropped down until it stopped.

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker said in a statement that he was the one surveying the investigation.
