One of the cases is Mark Swidan’s case who is one of the wrongfully detained Americans in China who is on death row and behind bars since 2012.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Beijing last Sunday to pay a diplomatic visit and its the highest-level diplomatic visit since 2018.

Remarkably, both Republican Rep. Michael Cloud and Sen. Ted Cruz implored America’s top diplomat to take all measures to secure the release of Mark Swidan, one of the wrongfully detained Americans.

The two Republicans wrote in a letter that Blinken’s visit might represent an opportunity to end the injustices of the wrongfully detained Americans.

Before Sec. Blinken’s departure, he said that he will raise cases of wrongfully detained Americans during his visit, although he didn’t mention Swidan’s name; the State Department considers Mark Swidan to be one of the wrongfully detained Americans and is also believed to have concerns about his health condition.

Wrongfully Detained Americans

Mark Swidan’s detention characterizes by a United Nations group as unjust and arbitrary. Republican lawmakers argue that the U.S. government has shown a lack of urgency about the case as Swidan was detained during the Obama administration.

There are three wrongfully detained Americans who are imprisoned in China, one of them is Mark Swidan, also a 67-year-old pastor David Lin that is imprisoned since 2006, and the last is Kai Li a 60-year-old held in prison since 2016.

Wrongfully detained Americans cannot leave China because of exit bans that were raised this month during a visit to Beijing by National Security Council senior director Sarah Beran and Assistant Sec. Daniel Kritenbrink.
