Mass Overdose of Fentanyl in Waikiki Hotel Kills 2, Hospitalizes 3

A mass overdose of fentanyl killed two individuals and hospitalized three others in Hawaii. Reports say the rising supply of illegal drugs is the main cause of death due to overdose in the U.S.

On the morning of June 4, emergency responders were called to report to Outrigger Reef Waikiki Beach Resort in Hawaii. Upon arriving at a hotel room, they discovered five individuals suffering from a mass overdose. A 44-year-old man was declared dead at the crime scene. Two other men, ages 40 and 53, were immediately transported to a hospital. Unfortunately, Honolulu Police announced that the 53-year-old man died thereafter.

In addition, an article in KITV states that two women, ages 47 and 53, were also taken to the hospital in critical condition. Upon investigating the crime scene, authorities stated that they discovered fentanyl and believed it was the cause of the mass overdose. Spokesperson Monica Salter of Outrigger states that the resort is collaborating with authorities in the investigation despite being unable to share the guests’ information due to privacy.

Mass Overdose in the U.S.

According to an article in Fox News, fentanyl is an opioid painkiller several times more potent than heroin and is commonly prescribed to treat extreme pain. Furthermore, experts say the rising supply of fentanyl had been one of the main causes of the increasing number of deaths due to overdose in the U.S.

Last month, the Big Island became the first department in Hawaii to release statistics about fentanyl. The statistics revealed that from January to April, the police officers from the Hawaii Police Department have made 22 arrests and recovered 598 fentanyl pills and 383.02 grams of fentanyl.
