Missing 5-Year-Old’s Remains Discovered
Authorities have arrested Alexus Tanielle Nelson, the mother of a missing 5-year-old girl, after human remains, believed to be those of her daughter, were allegedly uncovered in Nelson’s apartment in Aurora, Colorado, PEOPLE reported.
The investigation was triggered when Nelson’s mother contacted the authorities, expressing concerns about the safety of her grandchild after receiving “concerning statements” from Nelson via text.
Upon arrival at the scene, Nelson allegedly claimed that she had given her daughter up for adoption but failed to provide any supporting documentation. Law enforcement officials were unable to verify her claims through state records, resulting in her initial arrest.
While positive identification of the victim is pending confirmation by the Arapahoe County Coroner’s Office, the Colorado Bureau of Investigation has identified the missing girl as Maha Li Hobbs.
Aurora Police Chief Art Acevedo, speaking at a press conference, expressed confidence in the identification, stating, “We are very confident that this is our victim.”
He further indicated that murder charges are likely to be filed.
Missing 5-Year-Old’s Mother Faces Charges
Authorities have arrested Alexus Tanielle Nelson, the mother of a missing 5-year-old girl.
Initial reports from the Aurora Police Department indicated that Nelson, 27, had been taken into custody earlier in the week on a charge of attempting to influence a public servant.
However, on Thursday, additional charges were added to the case of the Colorado mother. Additional charges include child abuse resulting in death, tampering with a deceased human body, and tampering with physical evidence.
The charges were added after the missing 5-year-old’s remains were reportedly found hidden in a closet at Nelson’s residence.
Nelson is currently being held on a bond set at $100,000. It remains unclear whether she has entered a plea or obtained legal representation to address the charges on her behalf.
