Illegal Drug Raid in Raleigh Reaches $350,000 Settlement After Detective Framed Young Black Men In 2020

Former Detective Omar Abdullah was accused of framing several young Black men in an illegal drug raid scheme in May 2020. Consequently, the city of Raleigh agreed to a settlement of $350,000 for the families affected.

In May 2020, the Selective Enforcement Unit of Raleigh Police Department allegedly showed up with a no-knock warrant at a house on Burgundy Street. The owner, Yolanda Irving, recounted that a heavily armed tactical team broke through their door and aimed their guns at her and her children.

According to Price, Irving added that the officers searched through their house, allegedly looking for drugs and money. Furthermore, the 16-year-old son of Irving’s former neighbor, Kenya Walton, was also handcuffed amidst the chaos. The search warrant that the officers showed Irving reportedly included a photo of a house with red doors. However, the doors to Irving and Walton’s houses were colored beige.

Illegal Drug Raid

According to Jackson, to date, former Detective Omar Abdullah, the police officer in charge of the illegal drug raid is already fired. Reportedly, Abdullah was accused of framing several young Black men and indicted on charges of obstruction of justice. In addition, the city of Raleigh also agreed to pay the families of Irving and Walton with a settlement of $350,000.
