A package of bills that were re-introduced to the legislature of Michigan may change who can legally get a driver’s license regardless of their immigration status. If the DRIVE Safe Act will become a law, the Michigan League for Public Policy estimates that more than 55,000 residents will apply for a license.

According to King, the National Conference of State Legislatures reported that 19 states in the U.S. and the District of Columbia allow even undocumented immigrants to get a driver’s license. Nonetheless, residents who would want to apply in Michigan still have to meet requirements such as proof of residency.
