Keith Murriel’s Death Case

Keith Murriel, 41 years old, died in police custody on Dec. 31, 2022, after the former police officers of the Jackson Police Department arrested him for allegedly trespassing at a hotel,  CBS News reports.

Keith Muriel was a black man who died after he was pinned down by former police officers and was repeatedly stunned with stun guns during his arrest.

WLBT reports that Keith Murriel’s death was caused by cardiac arrhythmia with the manner being homicide.

Jackson City officials released extensive body-camera footage of the arrest showing authorities — who are allegedly former police officers —tasing Keith Murriel multiple times as they tried to handcuff him.

Murriel’s family attorney Daryl K. Washington asked for the body-camera footage to be shared because he said it would not fit that narrative, WAPT-16 reports.

They tased him again once he was in the police vehicle, but his legs were not. In the footage, Keith Murriel is heard telling and begging the officers to stop hurting him.

The released body-camera footage also shows that Murriel was then left alone in the back of the vehicle for a length of time. Murriel was no longer breathing when an ambulance arrived. He was brought to a local hospital but he was pronounced dead.

Washington told WAPT-16 that the sad thing about Keith Muriel’s death is that he died in a slow and painful death due to the amount of unnecessary force that was used on him.
