Natalee Holloway Case: Suspect Granted With Public Defender While Awaiting Extradition from Peru

Joran van der Sloot was accused as the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in 2005. Reports say he was recently granted an attorney from the public defender’s office to represent his case.

Court records state that Joran van der Sloot, 35, was granted an attorney from the public defender’s office to represent his case. Reportedly, van der Sloot was accused as the prime suspect in the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in 2005.

According to Sabes, Gray Borden, a Federal Magistrate Judge, authorized the appointment of Public Defender Kevin Butler to represent van der Sloot. On the other hand, Butler stated that the proceedings in Natalee Holloway’s case may result in van der Sloot’s extradition from Peru to the U.S.

Charges Faced by van der Sloot

According to Hardison, in 2010, van der Sloot faced charges of wire fraud and extortion after allegedly attempting to sell information about Natalee Holloway’s remains to her mother, Beth Holloway. Reportedly, van der Sloot demanded a total of $250,000, with a $25,000 worth of downpayment and the balance to be paid once Holloway will be successfully located in Aruba.

Reports say, in 2005, Natalee Holloway went missing during a Mountain Brook High School graduation trip in Aruba. Holloway was apparently staying in a holiday inn resort in the town of Noord. On May 10, officials in Peru declared that van der Sloot will be temporarily extradited to the U.S.
