A Year After Uvalde School Shooting, Investigation of Delayed Police Response Continues

May 24 marks the one year after an Uvalde school shooting happened in Texas. To date, investigation about how the armed officers waited over an hour to confront the 18-year-old suspect is pursued.

Tomorrow, May 24, marks the one year after the shooting incident at Robb Elementary School in the city of Uvalde in Texas. Reports say the Uvalde school shooting resulted in the death of two teachers and nineteen children between the ages of 9 and 11 inside a fourth-grade classroom.

According to Weber, a report from the Texas lawmakers stated that almost 400 officers from the federal, state, and local agencies were deployed to the Uvalde school shooting. However, investigation revealed that the heavily armed officers waited over an hour to approach and subdue the 18-year-old suspect. In addition, the report also accused the officers of prioritizing their own safety over saving innocent lives.

Uvalde School Shooting Investigation

An article in Al Jazeera states that the investigation following the Uvalde school shooting revealed that the officers involved recounted conflicting events. Nonetheless, the investigation triggered the public anger over gun violence. Furthermore, it re-established stricter firearm regulations and challenged authorities who withheld public records related to the Uvalde school shooting.

At least 5 officers who were under investigation following the Uvalde school shooting either resigned or were fired. Col. Steve McCraw, the head of the Texas Department of Public Safety, put most of the blame on the school police chief who was eventually fired by trustees.
