One-time checks are about to be introduced into law

The Minnesota legislature sent a $3 billion tax bill to the governor on Sunday in a bid to finish other priorities before Monday’s closing deadline. This is a really good bill, said DFL Vadnais Heights Senator Heather Gustafson. It will help seniors. It will help charity. It will help families and children.

Senate Minority Leader Mark Johnson criticized Democrats for raising taxes despite the state’s $17.5 billion surplus.

Tax increases and costs that affect families are going to wipe out any kind of credit you’re getting Johnson said. Your life will be more expensive in the future.

Additional billions in new taxes on top of tax cuts announced by DFL officials

The Democratic transportation bill would raise gas taxes in line with inflation, raise metropolitan sales taxes to finance transportation projects, and introduce a 50-cent fee on packages over $100. The bill also exempts more Minnesotans from the state’s tax on Social Security. The Social Security tax cut also falls short of the full elimination that some Democrats and Republicans had called for.
