On May 17, the U.S. Senate passed a resolution to overturn U.S. President Joe Biden’s immigration rule that eliminates the “public charge”. The “public charge” is also a rule for immigrants who try to obtain legal status while using some of the public benefits. An article in CNN states that the resolution passed with 50-47 votes. Reportedly, two Democratic senators— Jon Tester of Montana and Joe Manchin of West Virginia— crossed party lines. Nonetheless, the resolution is intended to reinstate the “public charge” rule of the Trump administration whose policies are stricter with the immigrants in the U.S.

Joint Resolution for ‘Public Charge’
According to Roth, the resolution for the “public charge” passed by the U.S. Senate was joint which means it would also need to pass in the House before it would reach Biden’s desk. To date, the House has not voted on the resolution yet.
Nonetheless, if the resolution also passes the House, it is still more likely that Biden would issue a veto. Senator Roger Marshall of Kansas, however, believes that with the national debt of more than $31 million and the crisis at the southern border, it is logical to favor citizens who will not be dependent on government benefits.
