As of January 2023, over $9 billion had already been distributed to eligible taxpayers under the Middle Class Tax Refund in California. The one-time payments have reportedly started being distributed in October 2022 and the final batch of payments was distributed last January 30.

However, according to Mitchell, the government of California had run into issues during its distribution of the Middle Class Tax Refund payments last fall. This means that when the program ended, they discovered that $750 million worth of tax refunds have not been claimed yet. Nonetheless, if a taxpayer is eligible, there is still time to claim the tax refunds of up to $1,050.

Who is eligible for the Middle Class Tax Refund?

According to Rahman, to be eligible for the Middle Class Tax Refund, a taxpayer must have been a resident of California for at least six months during the 2020 tax year and still living in California for the duration the payments were issued.

In addition, they must have filed their 2020 tax return on or before October 15, 2021. They must also not be qualified to be claimed as a dependent for the 2020 tax year. Lastly, they must meet the adjusted gross income limits of California (CA AGI). This is because the amount of payments to be received depends on the CA AGI.
